In times of unparalleled global crisis, it speaks volumes that the ongoing divorce between Bill and Melinda Gates has been able to rack up so much of the news cycle. As more information comes out about the divorce, we have been getting a rare glimpse into the deeply personal life of Mr. Gates, who it seems, has been dipping into the sugar bowl for some time now.
Still, as much as we all love a good human interest story, it is the implicit warning that this tale carries for other affluent people who may be tempted to use the bowl from time to time.
It would be easy to dismiss the Gates’ divorce as not particularly relevant to you. After all, you’re successful, you’re wealthy, but you’re probably not “richest person in the world” successful and wealthy. Still, if anything, the scope of Bill Gates’ fortune should serve as the biggest warning of all to the rest of us; if it can happen to Bill, with all his money and power, it can happen to you.
Recent developments in the divorce appear to indicate that Bill might have had a reputation for developing intimate relationships with employees—both at Microsoft and at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—over the last twenty years. Moreover, the timing of his recent stepping down from the Microsoft board “to focus on philanthropy” is suspiciously close to the investigation into his alleged indiscretions.
The direct fallout from his actions is a little hard to pin down since it seems Bill and Melinda had been living in “separate wings” of their mansion for years before the divorce. Similarly, while Melinda will almost certainly come away from the divorce with an eye-watering amount of personal wealth, Bill Gates will still be knocking on the door of the top ten wealthiest people in the world.
In short, the worst of the consequences to come out of this for Bill will likely be psychological—bruised egos, battered reputations, that sort of thing.
There are well-known (and somewhat crude) idioms for what Bill Gates has allegedly done, but we should all know that using the bowl at work is a recipe for disaster. There is the marital aspect, of course—and perhaps Bill and Melinda had an understanding. After all, it would be very difficult for Bill Gates to be discrete about having sex with Microsoft employees. But, ultimately, it is the workplace aspect that was his downfall.
The fact that Microsoft offered “exhaustive support” to someone Bill Gates attempted to initiate a relationship with two decades ago tells us a lot about where we are as a society today.
Power differentials exist everywhere, something that people who live the sugar lifestyle will know very well. But in a workplace setting, the power differential between a boss and their employees is fast becoming a social taboo, no matter how consensual the relationship.
The evolution of sugaring has provided many sugar daddies, mommies, and babies with an honest route to happiness. Few relationships are quite so open about where things are going as a sugar relationship, and that is something to be protected, cultivated. But we should never lose sight of how best to live this life in the context of the rest of the world.
